Chapter 15
I'm in my front yard pulling weeds from my flower beds. It's almost eighty today, and I'm covered in sweat. It's the end of May, and tomorrow my parents will be here for their first visit to my house. I already cleaned the inside and have the guest room set up. Since it is so nice out, I decided to make the outside look as good as possible. I want my parents to be proud of my home and I want to show them I can do this on my own. They worried about me when I moved to NY, and worried even more when I told them I was buying a house. I think once they see what I've accomplished they will worry less.
I put the small gardening shovel down and sit in the grass. I wipe sweat from my forehead before removing my gloves. Great, now I probably have dirt stuck to my face. I look at my flower bed, and I am only half way done. It's so hot today, and the sun shines brightly as there is no cloud coverage at all. I should probably put some sunblock on.
“Hey Eve, how are you today?”
I turn to look over my shoulder, and say, “Hi, Marie. I'm doing good. How are you?”
“I'm good thanks.
“You have been out here awhile, so I brought you a glass of lemonade.” She hands it to me.
“Thank you. That is kind of you.” I drink half of it and say, “Wow, this is good.”
“Kevin loves my lemonade. I make it fresh when it's this hot out.”
I give her a smile. I'm not sure what else to do. I don't really care to talk about Kevin. I've been avoiding Marie and Bob for the last few weeks. I don't have any idea what he's told his parents because he doesn't even talk to me. Thinking about him hurts and talking about him is worse. I try every day to do neither of those two things, so avoiding them is easier.
“You have plans this weekend?” I ask.
“We go to Bob's brother’s house every year for a cookout. How about you?”
“My Parents are coming in from Denver tomorrow for three days.”
“Oh, how wonderful. I hope you enjoy your time with them.”
“I'm sure the three days will fly by.”
“I should get back. I have a cake in oven for tomorrow.”
I drink the rest of the lemonade and jump to my feet. “Marie, your glass.” I hand it off to her and say, “Thank you for the drink.”
“You know where to get more.” She smiles and walks away.
I watch as she crosses the street to go home. When she goes inside, I walk back up my sidewalk and the front steps of my house and sit on my porch in a wicker chair. I open my phone and press my messages. I start to read past texts between Kevin and me since he landed in Los Angeles.
Kevin: I'm sorry Eve about the way I had to leave. I wish there were an easier way.
